I’m so excited to share this month’s income report with you. I’m finally making some moolah!
So a little late, but here’s how November went on the blog. I can’t believe 2016 is almost over!

November 2016 Wins
Stayed 2 weeks ahead.
This may seem like a silly win since it’s pretty much how I like to run things, but considering how overwhelmed I got this month and last, it’s up there. I’m happy I didn’t give up on staying on track!
Officially & legally registered my business.
In November, I finally took the plunge and registered my trade name as Flight & Scarlet, and got a business license as a sole proprietorship. My goal is to eventually incorporate to save myself the liability, but that’s not in my budget yet… and my insurance to cover any issues once that’s all set up!
So my friends, it’s official: Sareeta is a business-owner! I even have business bank accounts & am getting a business Visa card to keep all the financials separate and organized. So exciting!
Gained 2 more clients for my VA work.
Yay I reached last month’s goal! One of my clients is another blogger I did a guest post exchange with earlier this year, Caitlin Cheevers of And Possibly Dinosaurs. She gave me a free seat in her course The Indesign Adventure Guide. Super cool! If you’re at all interested in InDesign, you should check it out!
Wrote my business plan.
I did it! I had been meaning to for a while, but never got around to it. Now that I’m actually bringing in money (as little as it may be) I figured I needed to do it. So there it is. Whoo!
Finished Unit 4 of Elite Blog Academy!
Yay! I’m on Unit 5 now, which has been lots of fun — I’m learning about Facebook and Pinterest!
November 2016 Fails
Let the overwhelm continue.
Dammit, Sareeta, when will you learn?! With all the business tasks I had to do this month and trying to get my VA work going, I got real overwhelmed again. Just so much to do, so little time! The good thing is with my Feminist Positivity series, I can have a bit of a break while I visit my family in BC, as those are guest posts that I didn’t have to write. Phew!
What I Want To Do Now: Goals for December
Take a long break.
With all the overwhelm, I’m in need of a really good break. The holidays are a perfect time for this — I’m in BC for three weeks visiting my family, and I know I’ll get a lot of alone time. While I don’t think it’ll be totally blog-free, it’ll be really refreshing to have some relaxing free time. I brought books to read and tea to drink, and I’m looking forward to going for some runs (hopefully — if it isn’t too icy or snowy).
That’s it for December goals though. I really want to try do as little work as possible!
November 2016 Stats
These are my blog stats for the past month, according to Google Analytics. Super exciting — these are my highest since July. I’m gaining momentum whoo!
- Pageviews: 4,725 (+364)
- Sessions: 3,654 (+473)
- Visitors: 3,229 (+481)
- 19.1% of all visitors were returning visitors — a decrease of 2.7%.
- 80.9% of all visitors were new visitors — an increase of 2.7%.
- Bounce Rate (percentage of people who leave right away): 83.03% (+1.04%)
- Average Time Per Session: 51 secs (-11 sec)
- Pages Per Visit: 1.29 (-0.08)
- Top Referral Sources: Pinterest brought 44% of my traffic, and Facebook 20%.
Numbers are improving! Even with the slow winter season coming up, November was not too bad. Bounce rate got a tiny bit worse, but it’s no longer in the 90s so I’m pretty happy about that! Especially since page views are going up. It’s always great to see higher page views, but even better to know that people aren’t just visiting and leaving.
These are my social media stats as of December 3rd.
- Facebook: 264 page likes (+38)
- Twitter: 1,054 followers (+104)
- Google+: 72 followers (+1)
- Pinterest: 1,670 followers (+106)
- Instagram: 192 followers
- Bloglovin: 515 followers (+3)
- Email list: 70 subscribers (+21)
In the past little while, I started using Instagram more and have noticed quick (ish) growth and some traffic as a result. Two months ago I had maaaybe 15 followers, and no traffic from there but now I have 192 followers and 20 pageviews from Instagram. Still a tiny amount, but kinda cool. I’m not planning on going real intense on there or dedicating a ton of my time to it, but I’m there… so if you prefer to connect that way, feel free!

November 2016 Income Report
My friends… this is a BIG one!!
Virtual Services: $725.32 CAD
No payout for ads and affiliates until I reach $100 in any given account, but here’s what I earned within each account this month:
Total Income: $737.42 CAD
I’m so excited! I mean, I’m still in the red because of all my expenses setting up the business, and because of all the money spent throughout the year before I really considered this a business, but… I’m earning it back! Whoo!
Paypal fees: $24.39
Business expenses: $453.29
Business supplies: $113.88
Adobe Creative Cloud: $21.54
Business bank account fees: $11
Total Expenses: $1,140.24 CAD
Okay, it looks bad, I know. But don’t worry, I’m only buying one more thing in December to improve my skills and that’ll be it until I’ve earned everything back. I only need just under $500 to reach my monthly breakeven amount too, which is very achievable with my one ongoing client.
I was able to register for a GST number this month, so as of November 7th I record GST separately, since I will remit GST and also claim any GST expenses. All the expenses above leave GST out, since I get that money back. Keep that in mind if you’re thinking about opening an online business!
Also, yes, I spent a bit much on courses this month – but actually, $333 of it was free for me because it was in exchange for some virtual assistant (VA) work. I still have to record it though since it’s still a transaction, so $333 of my income and expenses are from that exchange. In return for my services, I got access to an InDesign course, which means I’m learning a LOT of useful skills that I can use to market myself and help clients better!
Adobe Creative Cloud was necessary for InDesign, but that’s an investment that not only will pay for itself quickly with client work. I also got it for SUPER cheap during the Black Friday sale and with my teacher discount. Sure helps that I’m a teacher at times like these!
The rest is business expenses and supplies that I don’t have to worry about for another year and have budgeted for so it won’t be rough when it comes. Yay!
How Elite Blog Academy Helped Me This Month
It took me back to the basics.
Unit 5 is about social media and viral growth, focusing mainly on Facebook and Pinterest. I’ve already got a good strategy for both, especially Pinterest, so I was sort of hesitant to change what I had.
But I looked through the material and still discovered things I could improve.
I’ve learned a lot outside of EBA about social media (though most of it was through people I met from EBA) but taking some time to step back and make sure I had the basics covered was important. I found there were things I had missed and hadn’t realized, which would make big difference!
Reminded me that things are always changing.
Every week, EBA members receive an email from Ruth Soukup, the creator of the class. This month I received an email informing current students that Elite Blog Academy is being totally revamped from what it’s been for the past two years, and that it’s being relaunched with all sorts of new information. Lots of things will be disappearing and changing in order to improve and adapt to what’s current.
It reminded me that social media is always changing, that strategies can be totally dashed. With the way technology and the internet is constantly evolving, it’s kind of inevitable that things won’t always be the same.
But I’m not going to stop going through EBA. Some people are stopping and are just going to start again when it’s relaunched in February, but I’m still so early on in the course that there is a lot of value for me in continuing. It’s not like what’s been taught is going to be irrelevant — it’s just not as current as it could be.
I’m also really happy I have all my special friends on the Flight & Scarlet newsletter — no matter what changes happen across social media platforms and even Google, I’ve always got them! Email really is amazing.
