So this is a cheesily titled post for a good reason. (I’ve been watching a lot of Glee, and so High School Musical somehow is also in my head.)
You know how 13 Reasons Why has kind of been saturating the internet and all of our Facebook feeds lately? Everybody seems to hate it, and I’m seeing so much anger over this show.
But you know what’s funny? I don’t.
13 Reasons Why is by no means perfect. I mean, it doesn’t even talk about mental illness, like… EVER… and it really SHOULD NOT have shown the actual suicide scene, since actual depictions of suicide are known to actually cause people to take their lives.
But… I actually loved it.
You shouldn’t watch it if you aren’t ready to, and there are trigger warnings before the particularly difficult episodes because of that — though admittedly they never display a hotline number — but I think everyone should watch it if they can.
It’s not easy to watch. It’s not comfortable to watch. But it’s not supposed to be.
As a survivor of sexual assault, the scenes in it were indeed triggering for me, but I didn’t think they were unnecessarily so. I was happy that it’s finally out there for anyone to see. I want everyone to know what it’s like, because nobody talks about it. It’s not something I would wish for anyone to live through, but in order to talk about it better and to create better empathy, I want everyone to know.
I also think it does a good job of making you empathize with people who are dealing with suicidal thoughts.
But I really don’t want to be part of that debate. This post isn’t about 13 Reasons Why, believe it or not.
Flight & Scarlet is starting something new.
It’s going in a new direction, if you will. (If you don’t get that reference, I am disappointed.)
The truth is: I’m getting EXHAUSTED from writing about just feminism. I feel like I’m constantly being argued with, and I’m always angry or being yelled at. I’m not allowed to make mistakes and when I do I sit here with my cat Matrix and feel like I’ve failed you. I feel like learning isn’t productive: it’s just about feeling guilty.
That’s what feminism has become for me. Again. Just anger and frustration.
I REALLY don’t want that.
I still love feminism.
It is a huge part of who I am. This website is what it is because of that. It’s taken me over a year to establish myself as a feminist and really own the title (label?) but the thing is… there is so much more to me than that.
And there’s so much more to you than that!
So Flight & Scarlet is becoming a website about living and learning an empowered life, or at least empowering you to find what it is that is most important to you so that you can go and live it.
If you’re like me…
You want to learn. You want to fight for what’s right. You want to make a difference. You wouldn’t be visiting this website if you didn’t!
But maybe you’re not so sure how to it. Maybe you need a little direction in finding exactly what it is you’re going to do.
So that’s what I’m going to help you do.
Flight & Scarlet will have lots of the same content — I’m not going to COMPLETELY stop writing about feminism! — but it’s going to have a lot of new content.
I’m going to give you an online home.
This is going to become a place where you go and find tips on maintaining healthy relationships with your friends, family, and partners. I’m going to share resources on sexual and mental health, body image, ideas on how to be socially responsible in your daily life, and inspiration to help you find what you love most. I’m even going to share basic stuff about living your life, like budgeting tips and thoughts/inspiration about work life!
Over the next while, you’ll start to see a few posts about some fun ideas for the home, as well as some great ideas for making your home a place you love. You’ll also see more about what I do in my own life to stay on top of everything, including finances and organization. I’ll be writing more about these topics than feminism for a while because well… it’s not like my site is lacking in that department.
I hope you’re prepared for a more sassy side of me, my friend. Shit’s about to get even more awesome.
