Hey you! Thanks for sticking around all the time and catching up with me every week. You’re the best.
This is my last Teas & Kitties weekly installment, as I’ll be switching to doing this monthly from now on — we’ll have to catch up in mid-March! But hopefully I’ll still see you around.
In the meantime — I want to share my Valentine’s Day & new ideas with you!
If we were having tea, I’d tell you that I was feeling a little down about my blog this week. I feel like I completely lost focus and that I had to give up what I like most about doing this in order to make any profit. From doing Melyssa Griffin’s free Blog Audience Blueprint email course, I learned that there are two kinds of niches for blogs — topic niches and audience niches. Topic niches are easiest to grow because the people who visit your blog go there to find things on your one very focused topic, so those who stick around are likely genuinely interested in what you have to say. An audience niche is a little harder to grow because it means you’ll likely have more than one topic, and not everyone you aim for, even if they are in your audience niche, will be interested in all of those topics. It also means you need to write pretty often so there’s always new content. So I thought I really should narrow down to feminism, gender, and sexuality since those are my big topics. But I wasn’t happy with that because I felt like I couldn’t really help others doing that. I’m sure if you’re here you like to read what I have to say on those topics… but I can’t really give you much besides entertainment.
So what am I good at? I’m good at saving money, writing, and teaching. So that’s what I’m going to do — I’m going to add info on how I save money for my fellow feminists. (Or at least, fellow people interested in reading about it!) So I’m really excited. I’m still mostly sticking to my main topics, but you can expect more on how you can save money — I promise you’ll learn lots, because trust me, I know how to be frugal and save. This is the first year that I’ve been able to make more than about $1000/month, which is what I’ve been doing for the past five years. #universitylyfe
I did tell you I wouldn’t lose my other topics completely!
If we were having tea, I’d tell you that teaching has been all right. I went to mostly junior highs this week and it was REALLY nice. I’ve been needing that. Some were still challenging schools, but in a different way. I liked what I did. Last year I volunteered at a school where the kids’ reality is that they spent the last year in jail, or they have a child they need to care for, and they simply can’t be at school at the time. The teachers there don’t police their language or what they wear, and they learn important life skills like cooking and budgeting. The schools I went to were similar — the kids are not living the same reality as many other kids. Many may never go to university or college. In fact, one of them was a youth correctional facility. But working there gave me so much passion — I just can’t give up on those kids. It made me want to go back.
If we were having tea, I’d tell you that Valentine’s Day was all right. G and I slept in, made bacon and egg sandwiches, and visited the pet store with Matrix and got him to try on a harness with a leash. He actually seemed all right with it in the store so we bought it! We’re going to be THOSE cat owners… but honestly, the amount of time he spends looking out the window really makes us think he wants to be back out there. I mean, that’s where he was born for all we know. Then G went to a bakery and bought me two AMAZING gifts: heart-shaped macarons (corny) and then a whole box of different flavoured macarons! I’ve never tried them before, but I’m so excited!
We also saw Deadpool and went for pizza. The movie was pretty hilarious. Just go see it for the opening credits. (Incredible — trust me.) I think they did kind of save the epic stuff for the trailer, because though there were good parts in the movie, I felt like they kind of rushed it and it could have been way better than it was. Still worth it though — and we saw it FO FREE! (Cineplex Scene points ftw! #onlyinCanada)
Our evening was spent playing a card game called Android: Netrunner together and then watching the last few episodes of the third season of Arrow with some Bailey’s coffee. (Netrunner is one of G’s more complex games, but I actually like it! One player is the hacker, the other the corporation, and it makes me feel super epic! Too bad I’m no real life hacker.) It was a pretty relaxed day. Yay! How was your Valentine’s Day/Singles Awareness Day?
If we were having tea, I’d tell you that a few days ago I started reading Gone Girl and I’m really enjoying it. It’s so different! The author is really good at creating two different voices and it’s a little more challenging on my mind than The Rosie Project. It’s so nice to be back to reading! One thing I notice is there is an interesting play around the topic of feminism. The main male character seems annoyingly misogynistic, but he seems like an unreliable narrator so it’s hard to tell. And the main female character is very forward and takes on a lot of responsibility, but she’s also stereotypically annoying. I just don’t know what’s going on, but I love it! Have you ever read a book like this?
If we were having tea, I’d tell you that G and I finished our month of unlimited yoga and I’m proud to say that I’ve improved! The first day we did a medium-level class and it kicked our asses, but the last couple days the medium-level was exactly right for us, though still challenging. Yay! I’m supposed to start kickboxing with C soon… I’m excited for it but way more nervous for that than yoga because I have zero experience with kickboxing and I still feel VERY unfit! The most I did was some karate when I was young, which I was good at the time but it’s been a good fifteen years since I’ve done it, maybe a little less. But in terms of my goals of getting active and eating healthier, I think I’m doing well. Haven’t lost any weight, but I feel stronger. What do you like to do to be active?
If we were having tea, I’d show these adorable pictures of Matrix. Just look how adorable he is!
If we were having tea, I’d finally tell you that it’s been really nice having these weekly tea dates. I’ll miss them a little, but it’ll make our monthly dates even better, I think. I hope you have a lovely month, friend!
While we’re catching up, though… how was your week? How was your V-Day/Singles Awareness Day?
