Well, looks like March has come and gone, and there goes my third month self-hosting my blog! I can’t believe it’s already April.
Here’s how the last month has been for me on the blog!
March 2016 Wins
I got ahead! (Finally!)
I DID IT! I worked my butt off this month, and am now two weeks ahead!
And it’s going to stay that way, dammit.
I started planning and budgeting my time.
This month, with Elite Blog Academy, I really got it together.
I have been making achievable to-do lists for the week and for each day, and instead of sitting down working all over the place, I worked in 30-minute chunks and took breaks. (Well, sometimes they were hour-long chunks, but still.) I did get a little behind at times, but it was much more manageable.
A lot of that is thanks to Rosemarie Groner at The Busy Budgeter, since she sent me her 10-hour week schedule when I bought my spot with EBA. It really helped me stay efficient — even if to get ahead, I was doing more like 20-22 hours a week at first.
Started writing a weekly newsletter.
Again, this is very much thanks to Rosemarie. She included some time in her 10-hour weekly schedule for a newsletter, so I thought I might as well get going on it. Those of you on the email list will continue to receive a special email from me every week! 🙂
(If you’re interested in signing up, click here. You’ll get the newsletter, a copy of my mini e-book The Quick & Dirty Guide to Feminism, and notifications of new posts, weekly or as they’re published — you decide.)
Connected with other bloggers in my niche.
In January and February, I tried to find as many other blogs like mine as I could. This month I reached out to them — and I’m really excited to have done so! It’s such a nice feeling to connect with other bloggers in my niche, because I’m not only learning a lot from them, but I feel like I’ve joined a small community. I’m even planning on doing a guest post exchange with a couple of them!
If you’d like to check them out, visit And Possibly Dinosaurs, Belle Brita, and Sagan Morrow. (I actually found Sagan on my own, and then saw her in the Elite Blog Academy forum — blogging is really quite a small world!)
March 2016 Fails
Didn’t create a better freebie…
This month, I did get it together in terms of time management and finally getting organized, but that meant I had to prioritize getting ahead over my other goals. So… no new freebie.
(That means I’m still open to ideas, so please let me know if you have one!)
Not spending enough time on EBA.
As much as I’ve been saying it’s thanks to Elite Blog Academy that I got it together, I didn’t spend nearly enough time on it as I had planned this month. Again, this is mostly because I was very focused on getting ahead, in order to open up more time to EBA. But unfortunately, not a lot of time did open up.
What I Want To Do Now: Goals for April
Focus on EBA (again).
Now that I’m two weeks ahead, I won’t be bogged down by an insane amount of catching up to do.
I’ll be able to cut down from 20 hours a week to hopefully only 10-12, and truly be able to work on Elite Blog Academy as much I need to. Not to mention, I’ll have more time to read and do other fun stuff.
I’m really looking forward to it — although I’m still noticing that tasks just take me a long time because I’m pretty thorough about it. I might end up cutting down to only 2 posts per week. We’ll see!
Create a better freebie.
Since this was set on the back burner last month, I’m going to try to get on it this month. Right now the freebie you get when you sign up for my email list is the mini e-book, 12 Money-Saving Tips for the Frugal Feminist — and since I recently changed my niche to focus more on feminism, gender, and sexuality, I don’t think it’s really reflective of my blog’s focus anymore.
I want to give you something you’ll love!
(Again, if you have any ideas for a new freebie, feel free to leave a comment or send me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org!)
Create a new logo/header image.
This has been on my to-do list for a while. I recently changed it because I created a new tagline, but it’s temporary. I don’t know if the image suits the site anymore. It’s a tad dark!
I do love the image, though. Ideally, I want to create a new logo/header image that uses the beautiful image as the colour of the font, but I have no idea how to do that. Working on it.
(If you know where I can go for this, please shoot me an email! I’d really appreciate the help.)

March 2016 Income Report
Media.net ads: $0
Affiliate links: $0
I still don’t have enough traffic for ads, although it’s definitely growing since I started EBA and stopped flailing with my focus. And I haven’t really been using affiliate links much lately, mostly because I’m not focusing on it.
Learning moment: I realize now that I was using affiliate links for stuff I believed in or liked, but that you guys aren’t interested in. So if you’re a newbie blogger like me, keep what your audience likes in mind — focus on your niche.
Anyway, income isn’t my focus right now.
I spent a little more on giveaways this month to meet my goals for social media likes/follows, which I guess was unnecessary, but I think they’re fun to do. I’ll probably only do one next month.
And I got my EBA stuff binded purely for the convenience — you don’t have to do it. You could easily just print the sheets and put them in a binder. But it was cheap and it looks beautiful!
SO again, I haven’t made any money yet, but that’s okay. Elite Blog Academy has already helped me streamline my message and my focus, and my website is already getting more traffic! Not that much more, but hey, it’s better than what I was doing with no direction.
How Elite Blog Academy Helped Me This Month
Stop worrying about numbers on social media.
I realized that I should stop paying any attention to how many followers I have on any social media platform, because content is what really brings people back to your site. It’s not really something that’s ever directly said in the EBA unit I’ve done so far, but the focus on content straight away reminded me to stop worrying, and honestly, it’s what everyone says. If I write good stuff, the numbers will grow naturally — less work for me!
It can happen, but it will take time.
I think one of the most important things I’ve learned so far from EBA is that making money from your blog is completely possible, but it takes a lot of work and a lot of time. It won’t happen overnight. So if you only do this for the money, you’ll probably burn out and quit pretty quickly. It just wouldn’t be worth it.
For me, it absolutely is worth it. I love everything about blogging, and I am really excited about sharing knowledge about feminism, queer issues, and sexuality. It doesn’t feel like work the same way that getting up at 6:30am every day does.
Aaaand.. that’s it for March!
Whew, that was a lot of info.
If you want to see more about how I actually set up my blog and the costs of that, you can check out this post where I explain it all 🙂
What is something you’d like to learn about feminism, gender, and/or sexuality?
